There’s been a bit of hype over the GT2 from Worx. The commercials claim the trimmer is the most versatile trimmer and edger in the world, at a super low weight of only six-pounds – at least two pounds lighter than nearly all of the competitors in the field.
The Worx GT2 is a string trimmer combined with an edger and mini-mower for an extremely versatile lawn care machine. The manufacturers claim that the machine can easily convert from one function to the next with ease, offering precision performance in all modes.
The machine is height and posture adjustable to meet the needs of anyone in the household or staff, and is 100% automatic single-line feed, meaning that it’s ready to go anytime you need it.
The machine has a 90-degree tilt head, spacer guard as standard, and two-position guide wheels. The trimmer comes with a high-density 20-Volt MaxLithium battery, which is lighter and more powerful than a Ni-Cd battery. This battery should also last longer than others, giving you more trimming/mowing/edging time before needing a recharge.
What Makes the GT2 Unique from the Competition?
Most string trimmers are just that – a single function lawn care tool. Many also add the function of edging, with a guide wheel or two. The Worx GT2, however, claims to be the most unique and versatile trimmer in the world, offering not just these two functions, but an additional function of mini-mower.
The trimmer is also supposed to only weigh a meager six-pounds, making it one of the lightest – if not the absolute lightest – trimmers on the market.
The adjustable height and posture features also make this trimmer stand apart, along with the trimmer having a two-inch wider cutting diameter – 12-inches total – than the competition.
The battery that comes standard with the GT2 is more powerful and longer lasting than other batteries have been as well, meaning that you’ll have more mowing/trimming/edging time with this lightweight machine.
This is a single line, no bump feed trimmer, with a quick-release lever for the fast, telescopic height adjustment, and 90-degree tilting shaft. It has a dual-function flower spacer guard to protect desirable plants while still giving a precise edging.
What Does the Worx GT2 Cost?
If you shop online, you’re likely to find the GT2 available for anywhere from $100 on places like Midland Hardware and QVC up to $130 on a variety of other sites. You can find the machine on Worx.com, of course, Amazon, Tool Barn, Lowes, Home Depot, Aubuchon Hardware, and even Wal-Mart. In-store retailers carry the machine as well, though if you’re going to buy in person, you should always call ahead to make sure they have the model available at your preferred shopping location.
Many physical retailers offer a price-match guarantee for online prices, so even if you plan to purchase in-store, be sure to look up the best prices in your area ahead of time. Take a screenshot, save the webpage, and have the link handy when you go to make your purchase.
Or, if you need a payment plan, you may be able to make three payments on some sites instead of the lump sum upfront.
Guarantees, Refunds, and Warranties Available
Worx offers a 30-day money-back guarantee if you purchase directly from them, while other retailers may offer similar deals. Check to verify the guarantees and return policies before making a purchase, however, to ensure you know what your options are if for some reason you decide the machine isn’t for you.
The trimmer/edger/mini-mower also has a three-year manufacturer’s warranty to back up the quality of materials and workmanship.
What Do Others Think of the Worx GT2?
When you look online for reviews, you’ll find a wide variation. The machine has a mixed reputation, ranging from people stating that the machine works incredibly well, while others give it a “so-so” middling review. However, most of the top result reviews you’ll find when you do a Bing search for “Worx GT2” will pop up with mostly four-stars and higher.
Most people seem to find the trimmer to be quiet, lightweight, and easy-to-use. The height adjustment, grip, and being lightweight make the trimmer a better fit for many than standard trimmers and makes the job of trimming, edging and mowing with it much less of an unpleasant task.
On the other hand, some reviews give the most common complaints of some folks getting bad batteries that only lasted about 20 minutes of run time. For some trimmers, this would be a decent review, but for the GT2, whose battery is supposed to last twice as long, that’s not so great.
Some reviews also state that the GT2 simply doesn’t have as much power as the users expected. People said that the trimmer works on shin-high grass and shorter but couldn’t handle anything taller than that without several passes. These reviews also showed that the trimmer doesn’t always work on things thicker than grass.
And, finally, the most common complaints indicated that the Worx GT2 are made from lower-quality plastic parts and break quickly. The cap that keeps the spool on, the wheels, and the trim guard, in particular, seem to be the culprits here.
However, the GT2 has been around for a while, and Worx seems to have made some upgrades to the product, so the more recent less favorable reviews are less prevalent than they were a few years ago. Ratings from real life users have gone up – the average star rating used to be 3.6 on Worx but is now another star higher – and there seem to be fewer complaints about all the issues mentioned above.
So, overall, it seems that while for a time some folks thought the Worx GT2 was only average, the company listened and made some great changes that have upped its ranking and preference levels for users, and it can now be considered to be a fairly high-quality, highly-rated trimmer/edger/mower combo.
How Does it Compare to the Competition?
If you look for “trimmer, edger, mower combo” machines online, your Bing search will result in nearly all GT2 information. The rest of the results only show trimmer/edger combinations or products that do the functions individually.
Since there’s nothing quite like the GT2, we’re going to compare trimmer/edger combos to see how the product, overall, holds up against the competition.
We’re looking at three competing cordless trimmer/edger combos that run in the same basic price range, widely available online or in stores near most locations in the United States.
Overall Rating from Consumers: 4 out of 5 stars
- Converts from trimmer to wheeled edger;Amp Hour : (2) 1.5 AH
- Power Drive Transmission for increased torque
- 2-speed control for more power or extended runtime.Line Diameter :0.065 inches. Cutting Swath 12 inches
- EASYFEED allows you to advance your line with the push of a button with no bumping required
The Black & Decker trimmer/edger comes fairly highly rated from users, though with a somewhat lower rating than the Worx Gt2. The combo machine converts easily from a trimmer to a wheeled edger, both by claims of the company and the users who employ the machine in their yards.
There’s a power drive transmission, and 2-speed control to either use more power on tough jobs or extend the runtime. The machine has an easy-feed with no bumping and power cut boosts.
Overall, users find this machine effective, and easy-to-use. It doesn’t have the mini-mower function, as we noted before, but does seem to effectively do the other jobs that the Worx machine does.
Competition 2 – Ego 56-Volt Cordless Power Head + Edger Bare Tool
Overall Rating from Consumers: 4.2 out of 5 stars
The Ego 56-Volt trimmer has a higher voltage than the Worx GT2, and is a more versatile trimmer than average as well. The Ego trimmer has a power head and edger bare tool, as well as a multi-head/edger attachment for a more powerful and precise yard work day.
The machine has a brushless edger and powerhead and works within the Ego Multi-Head System, meaning its compatible with the other equipment in the series from Ego.
The trimmer has a variable speed trigger with a lock off switch, and a guide wheel with a depth-adjustment knob for more precise edging.
Overall, users find this machine a bit more powerful, more effective, and more precise than the Black & Decker model we looked at, but less versatile and heavier than the GT2. The overall rating for the machine is also 0.4 stars lower than the GT2, which just goes to show that voltage isn’t always the winning feature.
Overall Rating from Consumers: 4.4 out of 5 stars
- This refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, and may arrive in a generic box
The final competitor edger/trimmer we’d like to look at is the Ryobi full crank straight gas string trimmer. The design is supposed to help make for a longer life and increased reliability, with easy handling and conversion from trimmer to edger.
The trimmer works with a variety of attachments to “create” other tools as well, including a blower and tiller. It works with any of the other Ryobi Expand-It Universal brand fit attachments.
The trimmer starts easily and runs efficiently, according to most users, and the full crank engine offers a much longer life for the machine than others. The machine has reel-easy bump-feed for fast reloading and a longer shaft for extended reach.
Generally, users find this machine easy to use, versatile, and effective. The various attachments that combine with the machine to make it into a blower, tiller, and even a pole saw, make this an extremely useful tool for anyone’s yard.
The ratings are overall only 0.2 out of 5 stars lower than the Worx GT2, with a long-standing quality reputation to back it, plus a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty.
What Do We Think of the Worx GT2?
When it comes down to the bottom line on the Worx GT2, we’d easily recommend it to those who are looking for a high-quality, powerful, lightweight, and easy-to-use trimmer/edger. Since the upgrades from Worx came in, this machine has proven itself to live up to its name and beat out most of the competition.
The mini-mower function gives the machine an added boost of versatility and function, which also appeals.
We’d highly recommend this piece of equipment for your yard work needs.
